ACORN’s commitment to walking the talk

At each organic conference, ACORN works hard to source as many ingredients from the host province, and if not available from other Maritime farms. The challenge of delivering the food to conference can take some creativity and sometimes feels like an underground railroad of sorts.

On Wednesday, we found out that one of our project partners was traveling from Halifax to Charlottetown and back on Thursday/Friday. We jumped into action, calling two of our organic food suppliers in PEI to see if they could deliver their products to Charlottetown. For Emmerdale Organic Farm, that also meant going into Summerside to pick up some donated organic cheese from ADL.

During the terrible snow storm, our wonderful volunteer driver met me in Au Lac mid-afternoon to make the connection–a full SUV full of boxes, giant squash, and a larger cooler with frozen tomatoes and cheddar. This food now all rests at my home, until a delivery to the hotel in Fredericton can be made (maybe this week).

Chefs need their ingredients ahead of time, and without infrastructure that lends itself to small perishable deliveries, we’ll just have to remain creative!

You can taste all the wonderful local, organic food in Fredericton, March 10-12th. Organic banquet tickets are $30/each and keynote is Chef Jesse Vergen. Call us at 1-866-322-2676 to order yours today.
